The House Music Experience — Tanya Louise
From an early age, Tanya Louise stood out. She excelled in school and in music, winning talent shows and organizing performances her classmates still talk about today. Like many of her generation, she embraced hip-hop—and still loves it—but everything changed the first time she heard Steve “Silk” Hurley’s “Jack Your Body.”
That moment opened the door to House Music, and Baltimore City came alive.
During the golden era of Baltimore’s club scene, House Music ruled the night. Legendary venues like Cignals, Odell’s, and the Godfrey’s Ballroom became cultural landmarks. North Avenue would be shut down like the strip in Miami—cars lined up for blocks, crowds wrapped around buildings—everyone waiting to get inside. People stood in long lines just to hear iconic DJs like Wayne Davis, DJ Jerome Hicks, Tony Fashaw, and later DJ Michael Joyner.
Thursday nights were “Pump Night” at Cignals. Weekends belonged to Odell’s. Frat parties at Morgan State and Towson University kept the energy going. After moving from her original neighborhood, Tanya began attending Fantasies on Howard Street, where DJ Michael Joyner made every Saturday night unforgettable. House Music poured out of the clubs and into the streets. It wasn’t just music—it was a movement.
Soon after, Tanya relocated to New York following a brief performance with Parliament Funkadelic. She began singing in supper clubs and eventually met DJ Romain at the legendary Nell’s Nightclub. It was there, working together in the studio, that they began shaping what would become her signature sound and her breakout record:
“Deep In You.”
Life took another turn when Tanya moved to New Jersey after learning she was expecting a child. With a renewed sense of purpose, she founded her own label, Du/Mas Records. Her first release, “Distant Groove,” featured “Deep In You” on the B-side, with the records pressed at Disc Makers.
At the time, DJ Romain was working with Irma Records, and when they heard both the original and remix of “Deep In You,” they wanted to sign it. Facing limited funding but growing opportunity, Tanya made a bold decision to expand her reach and licensed the record to UMM Records.
“Deep In You” went on to peak at #4 on the Italian charts.
This success led Tanya to move to Italy, where she lived and toured for three years, leaving a lasting cultural impact on the House Music scene. Her follow-up single “Lovely Day” and a triple-pack album release cemented her status as an international House Music icon.
While in Italy, she opened for the Wu-Tang Clan, and during this period, the television show The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air unexpectedly helped her learn Italian. By 1996, Tanya Louise was not just performing in Italy—she had become part of its musical fabric.
The music from this era continues to resonate and sell worldwide. Recognizing the timeless quality of her sound, Altra Moda Music of Holland has re-signed her classic catalog—bringing Tanya Louise full circle.
Today, Tanya continues to create and release new music rooted in the culture that shaped her. Her current self-release, “Alive” with Pleazure and DJ Romain, keeps the House Music spirit alive. She is also featured on releases with Ananke Kronos Records alongside Yannick Lord and DJ Blayne.
For Tanya Louise, the journey always leads back to where it started:
House Music. All night long.
